Reaction Motors in New Jersey - Thiokol and the Last Days

By Shireesh Kumar, NJIT

In most of their research RMI focused on Liquid fuels and Thiokol was the producer of solid rocket fuel at that time.
Both of the firms merged on 1958 and approved by shareholders too. They started making X-15 hypersonic rocket powered airplanes, which are high altitude aircraft. The merger of RMI with Thiokol ended up with problems. Thiokol Managment did not see any future in in big bulky RMD engines. The final nail in the coffin for RMD was when the Navy, who were the the bread and butter of RMD, cut down their spendingdue to the Vietnam war.

In 1972 the carrer of the first commercial Rocket industry in United Stated was ended.
