Joseph Board's Company
Joseph Board's Company is re-enactment group based on the local
militia of the Ringwood area in Northern New Jersey during the Revolutionary
War. Board's men were the farmers, landowners and some of the ironworkers
who did their part till the very end of the war.
Here is a paragraph about Joseph Board from Albert Heusser's biography
of Robert Erskine:
Captain Joseph Board [was] one of the sons of Cornelius Board,
the pioneer iron-master of the region [and] served prominently in the
patriot cause. A few facts as to his career have come down to us. A
prosperous farmer at the outbreak of the Revolution, - having augmented
his revenue from the fields by doing a considerable business through
the hauling of Ringwood iron to tidewater at Acquackanonck Landing -
he helped the patriot cause materially in the organization of a company
of militia, and, as their captain, served with distinction in the New
Jersey brigade. Joseph Board attained the ripe old age of ninety-four,
surviving until 1832, an honored resident of the community.
The Militia participates in many events throughout the year, but the
big event is in September, co-sponsored by the Militia and the 63rd Regiment
of Foot British Light Infantry.
